Love Your Lake Returns for a 5th Season in Muskoka

Love Your Lake LogoMuskoka Watershed Council kicked off the 2017 Love Your Lake program in Muskoka with a visit to Ada Lake in Muskoka Lakes. Ada Lake is one of four lakes that are participating in the program this year.

Love Your Lake is a shoreline assessment and stewardship program that provides shoreline property owners with resources to help improve the health of their shoreline and their lake. The program is developed and coordinated by Watersheds Canada and the Canadian Wildlife Federation, who work with regional partners and lake organizations to deliver it locally.

In Muskoka, the Muskoka Watershed Council (MWC) coordinates the program with the assistance of The District Municipality of Muskoka and with funding from Service Canada (Canada Summer Jobs Program) and the Canadian Wildlife Federation.

In addition to Ada Lake, MWC is working with the respective lake associations on Brandy Lake, Stewart Lake and Wood Lake this summer to carry out the program. In total, 650 shoreline properties will be assessed over the next seven weeks.

As part of the Love Your Lake program, MWC also assists property owners with renaturalizing their shorelines to improve fish and wildlife habitat and water quality. With funding from Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program and the Three Mile Lake Association, four properties on Three Mile Lake in Muskoka Lakes will renaturalize their shorelines, based on the shoreline assessments that were carried out on Three Mile Lake last summer as part of the 2016 Love Your Lake program.

This is the fifth year for the Love Your Lake program in Muskoka. Barbara King, Executive Director of Watersheds Canada, is pleased with the success of the program in Canada. “The Love Your Lake program answers the question of how exactly one can improve the health and longevity of their shoreline. It provides both individuals and lake organizations with the tools and information they need to improve their shorelines and ultimately make their lakes healthier.”
