After a taking a hiatus in 2018, the Great Muskoka Paddling Experience (GMPE) is back! The 8th annual paddling event will take place on Saturday, October 12th at Annie Williams Park in Bracebridge and will be the last race of the season sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe & Kayak Racing Association.
GMPE is the brainchild of Sandy Schofield, a local resident and paddling enthusiast who passed away this spring. The GMPE Organizing Committee is holding the 2019 event in Sandy’s memory and invite paddlers in canoes, kayaks, SUPs and north canoes of all skill levels to take part in this fun racing experience on the Muskoka River.
Race lengths for canoes, kayaks and SUPs are 5, 10, and 20 km and the north canoes will paddle for 8.6 km. With multiple categories available for each race, everyone can participate! The event is made possible thanks to local sponsors and a Town of Bracebridge Event Tourism Grant.
New this year, registration will only take place online and will close October 5th. All paddlers, regardless of how they place in their race, will have an opportunity to win great prizes donated by our generous sponsors. You can also participate in our silent auction featuring a Star Board 14′ Inflatable Touring SUP valued at $1400 donated by Kayak Sport Canada!
Proceeds from the event go to support watershed health initiatives, including Muskoka Watershed Council’s Muskoka Watershed Report Card.
Not interested in paddling? GMPE also needs volunteers to help during the race. Learn more at www.muskokapaddlingexperience.com. Of particular need this year are volunteers with boats who can help direct paddlers on the water.
