Once again, leaders of Muskoka’s paddling scene have come together to support our local environment through a new fundraising initiative with Muskoka Watershed Council (MWC), a non-profit volunteer organization promoting watershed health since 2001.
The award winning marathon paddling event known as Muskoka River X (MRX) is considered the longest single day expedition paddling race in the world. With ongoing support from Algonquin Outfitters (AO), race organizers Rob Horton and Mike Varieur have succeeded each year at gaining nation-wide recognition for their challenging and rewarding paddling events.
2017 marks the fifth anniversary of MRX and the first annual Row for a Reason campaign. The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness and support for MWC’s ongoing efforts to evaluate and report on the health of the land, water and wildlife in the region and educate citizens on how to make informed decisions that benefit our natural environment.
A draw will take place on June 18th for the opportunity to win some amazing prizes donated by Algonquin Outfitters, including a $250 gift card. To be automatically entered into the draw, make a donation to MWC of any size by visiting www.muskokawatershed.org/donate-now or encourage your friends to donate by sharing a link to the donation page on Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #rowforareason.
“This collaborative effort stems from the shared belief that a healthy and vibrant watershed will continue to attract and inspire outdoor enthusiasts from across the globe and from right here in our own backyard” explains Lyndsie McGregor, a volunteer with MWC. “Your support will help MWC continue to deliver programs that help protect and preserve Muskoka’s watersheds now and for the future.”
A new relay race has been added to the series of MRX events. Taking place during National Paddling Week in June, MRX’s 24 Hours of River X is a first for North America and challenges teams to go as fast – and as far – as possible in 24 hours. Participants of this relay race are collecting pledges in support of MWC and the Row for a Reason campaign. Visit www.muskokariverx.com or www.muskokawatershed.org to learn more.
